1 Kings 8:22-30, 54-60

Matthew 9:35-10:23

This afternoon’s readings (or lessons, as they were once called) have set a very good tone for this act of worship.

First of all we have been given words of the wise King Solomon as he prayerfully dedicates both the Temple and his own life to the God of his ancestors - including his father David. In doing so, Solomon also blesses and dedicates the whole assembly of God’s people, those who will meet for praise and worship, sacrifice and offering.

St Paul's Pillar

There are many churches dedicated to St Paul around the world, but this one is rather special. Sue Fry took this photo of the Church by St Paul's Pillar in Paphos, Cyprus, or Ayia Kyriaki Chrysopolitissa. You can see the remains of the pillar to which St Paul was tied and whipped.

Harry Hawker lived opposite St Paul's and is buried in the churchyard. He founded Hawker Aircraft in Kingston, which later became Hawker Siddeley and eventually British Aerospace.

Project Hawker 2013

A hundred years ago he was the only pilot to accept the challenge of flying around Britian in a seaplane in the Circuit of Britain Race, and he managed to fly over 1000 miles. To mark the centenary, the team at Project Hawker 2013 recreated the flight in the oldest surviving seaplane, a Calatina G-PBYA.
