As a Church of England parish church, St Paul's Hook is privileged to have a place at the heart of the local community, partly through providing baptisms, weddings and funerals.
If you are considering asking us about one of these events we suggest you first take a look at the Life Events page on the Church of England website. There you will find out more about what we and other parish churches can offer, and as well as really helpful answers to lots of questions that people have in these circumstances.
St Paul's offers Baptism (sometimes called Christening) to all living within the parish.
During the service the baptism candidate (or their parents and godparents) makes public promises of Christian faith and commitment with implications for the years to come. Because of this it is a requirement of the Church England that godparents are themselves baptised.
In addition St Paul's also offers An Act of Thanksgiving (sometimes called Dedication) which many who do not wish to become regular churchgoers find is more suitable.
If you would like to find out more about a service of Baptism or Thanksgiving at St Paul's, or who can be a godparent, please contact the Parish Office. We would love to hear from you.
If you decide to proceed with a service then you will be contacted by our Baptism Visitor to agree a date and time for the service. Baptisms normally take place monthly, within one of our Sunday morning services at either 9am or 10.30am.
St Paul’s is a popular and welcoming venue for marriage services but, more than that, offers a community Christian context for a couple to make their wedding vows.
Weddings at St Paul’s Hook have always been available to couples where:
- either the bride or groom lives within the parish
- either the bride or groom is a regular worshipper at St Paul’s and has expressed this by joining the church’s Electoral Roll
From 1st October 2008 the Church of England Marriage Measure means that we can also offer marriages where a personal connection can be demonstrated, specifically where:
- one of the couple was baptised or prepared for confirmation in the parish;
- one of the couple has ever lived in the parish for six months or more;
- one of the couple has at any time regularly attended public worship in the parish for six months or more;
- one of their parents has lived in the parish for six months or more in their child’s lifetime;
- one of their parents has regularly attended public worship there for six months or more in their child’s lifetime;
- their parents or grandparents were married in the parish.
(All of these refer to Church of England services)
At St Paul’s we are pleased that Church of England parishes are able to consider offering marriage in church under particular circumstances where the bride or groom has been previously been married. However each situation is different. If this is part of your enquiry about getting married at St Paul’s, please say so when making your initial enquiry so that you can discuss the situation confidentially with the Vicar before proceeding further.
You can download the list of Wedding Fees.
We also offer a Blessing for a Civil Marriage. Again, you can download the list of fees for a service of Blessing.
Please contact the Parish Office if you would like to find out more about Weddings and Blessings at St Paul's, including banns of marraige and the costs and administrative procedures involved. We would love to hear from you.
The Vicar and other ministers from St Paul’s regularly conduct funeral services at St Paul’s as well as at local Crematoria and Cemeteries.
The first step for those arranging a funeral service is to appoint a Funeral Director. If you would like the Vicar or another minister from St Paul’s to conduct the funeral service you should advise the Funeral Director at the outset that this is what you would like them to do. It will also help everyone if you request that they do not book a time and venue for the occasion before speaking with us.
If you have any questions about a Christian funeral service please contact the Vicar through the Parish Office, or telephone him directly on 07983 398 984.
We can also bury ashes in our Garden of Rest. Details of the options and fees for this can be downloaded.
