I have observed current affairs with considerable interest ever since I was a teenager. The first General Election  I followed closely was that of 1979, which Margaret Thatcher won so decisively. Enjoying the cut and thrust of a national contest for the first time, I nevertheless realised that no one party’s manifesto had all the answers and that, anyway, those who had written the manifestos were unlikely to be able to implement them in full.
